Additional Information
The details of the types of songs given in the audio file are as follows:
The people living in rural areas sing devotional songs during temple festivals, paddy-cutting songs while working in fields to reduce tiredness, lullabies, and entertainment songs. These are called folk songs. Most of these songs are not written down. They learn them from their ancestors through oral tradition. These songs are an important part of the daily life of the people in this village.
Music has always played an important role in the lives of Tamil people. There are different song forms for every event of life. Among them, Kummi is an ancient dance form of Tamil Nadu. Usually, without musical instruments, people join hands in a circle and dance, keeping rhythm by clapping. One woman leads the song, others repeat and dance together. According to the tune, they clap and dance with movements. Mostly women take part in Kummi, though in some places men also join. Kummi songs have been passed orally from generation to generation, and people still sing them today. Deepam Kummi, Paddy Kummi and Mulaippari Kummi can still be seen in festivals.
Some women in this village sing folk songs like Kulavai songs, Karuppasamy songs, Amman songs, Jallikattu songs, Kummi songs, and other Mulaippari songs. They create different tunes for each song and sing them.
