Additional Information
The Nilaiyur tank (kanmāi), located in Nilaiyur, a small village in the Madurai district, is the primary water source for this village. Copper plates and inscriptions confirm that water management and protection were major responsibilities of the Pandya kings. Strengthening of dams and construction of stone sluices were considered significant contributions of the Pandya administration.
The Nilaiyur tank is an exemplary irrigation structure that was renovated during the period of the Early Pandyas. One of the four sluice gates (madhagu) of the tank bears an inscription with the name of the Pandya king Parantaka Veeranārāyaṇa (860–905 CE). The inscription reads “Sri Veera Narayanan”. Since the king's name is inscribed on the sluice here, it can be understood that the renovation work on the tank was undertaken during his reign.
