Additional Information
This is an inscription related to a royal order issued in the name of the Shiva temple located in this region. The inscription is engraved on three sides of a stone slab. It mentions the Siddharthi Utharayana (Spring) year, along with references to the ritu yoga and karana. The initial lines in Sanskrit indicate the issuer of the inscription. Due to the worn condition of the inscription, parts of it are unclear and difficult to read.
In this inscription, a temple dancer (devadasi) named Chokki Thummisi of this temple has donated land located in the Puramalai region of Thattankulam village to a person named Manickam. An order was issued to provide one kalan (ancient measure of paddy) of paddy and half the share of the agricultural produce. This document was written by a person named Vinotha Brahmādhirajan. In one line of the inscription, the words “Chandesar aruliya” (bestowed by Chandeshvara) are mentioned.
At the time this inscription was created, the Vijayanagara Empire was ruled by Sadasivaraya, and Madurai was governed by Viswanatha Nayaka. At the end of the inscription, it is stated that anyone who violates these commands will incur the sin equivalent to killing a cow and a Brahmin on the banks of the Ganges.
