Additional Information
The cave site called Kurukkup Parai stretches approximately 100 feet east to west, with a height of 2–5 feet, and is situated about 10 feet above the ground level. The mountain path near this cave is ancient. This path connects from the Dindigul region to Krishnapalayam and then to Kruttralam. Therefore, long ago, merchants used this path for travel.
Inside this cave, over fifty paintings from different periods are visible in white color. These include human figures in various postures, both in groups and individually, as well as with animals. Some of the human figures are female. In addition, there are unidentifiable figures and some symbols scattered throughout. One painting depicts a man attempting to subdue a bull, which may refer to practices like bull embracing or Jallikattu that continue today. Another scene shows a man seated on a horse while another on the ground attacks him with a long spear-like weapon. Nearby, another figure on horseback is shown being struck and falling, possibly representing a raiding event. In a separate painting, a warrior is shown riding an animal resembling a tiger.
These paintings were created by different artists across various periods. The oldest paintings appear to date back to the Iron Age. Over subsequent periods, painting activity continued in this site. Most of the paintings here are line drawing style depictions. In some areas, colors have been applied within the figures. The animal figures in these paintings are simple yet exhibit a refined design.
