Summary
The sculpture of Karuppu Sami is installed in a small mandapa-like structure with stairs, but without walls. Karuppu Sami stands on a pedestal with a curled moustache and holds a billhook (arivaal) and a mace in his hands. Near this mandapa, an altar (bali peetam), along with idols of Vinayaka (Ganesha) and Nāgar (serpent deity), are placed on a pedestal. A small pond is also located near the temple premises.
Additional Information
A festival is held in this temple once every five to ten years. During this festival, horse idols are brought from Cheṭṭiguṇḍu Kanmāi (irrigation tank)to the Sengundram Aiyan temple. The temple has five Ambalakkārars. They are responsible for maintaining the temple and are honored during the Terracotta horse procession festival. Similarly, the Purattasi Pongal festival is also held once every five years. During this festival, after the Karuppanna sami Idol-hoisting event, the ceremonial sprouts are carried in a procession accompanied by music, and finally they are immersed in the river. The custom of beating drums (melam) during the Pāriveṭṭai festival (a hunting sacrifice ritual) is also followed by them. Due to financial constraints and other reasons, the temple festival is not held every year.
