Summary
The Thiruvappanur Temple is dedicated to god Shiva. The temple was built during the Pandya period and expanded during the Nayaka period. This temple does not have a Rajagopuram (main gateway tower); instead, the entrance features stucco sculptures of god Shiva in his Rishabarudar form, along with depictions of Parvati, the Thevāra nālvar (Four Tamil Shaivite Poets), Murugan, and Vinayagar.
Upon entering, one can see the flagstaff (dwajasthamba) and the sacrificial altar (Balipeedam). The temple's sanctum is faces east, with a decorated front mandapam (hall) leading into it. Circling the temple, one can find the shrines of Vinayagar, Kasi Vishwanathar, Panchalingam, and Chandikeswarar. The temple’s sacred tree is the Vanni tree. Near the Vanni tree, there is a shrine for the chief goddess. Between the shrine of the goddess and the sanctum of god Shiva is the shrine of Murugan. This arrangement is referred to as the 'Somaskandar arrangement' in temple architecture. In a separate pavilion, there is a stone sculpture of Natarajar and Sivakami, with Nandi depicted nearby playing the Maththalam drum. Additionally, there are smaller shrines for the Navagrahas (Nine Planets), Kailasanathar, Bhairavar, and Palani Murugan.
