In this ancient Shiva temple, inscriptions are found at the base area of the sanctum. However, as they are now in a very worn condition and were relocated during the temple renovation, these inscriptions cannot be read continuously to derive meaning.
In these fragmentary inscriptions, details of devadana lands, their boundaries, information about temple administrators, donations given for providing explanations, land grants, land boundaries, names of sellers, information about ponds and pond areas sold, coins called thiravam, 18 adikols for land measurement, karunsei, punsei and other lands, the amount to be paid to the temple treasury, and many historically significant details are recorded.
The deity of this temple is referred to in inscriptions as the Paramaswamis of Thenmutt Nadu. One inscription mentions that the Paramaswamis of Thenmutt Nadu donated land in the Karunilakudi region to the temple under the Chola-Pandya Chaturvedi Mangalatthu Sabha.
For the Thirumoolathaan Perumandigal of the Mutta Nadu Thirumanikkayathu, Pothumavan Kanayinaath Athaana Etti arranged daily offerings of 40 vellada and 10 semmara for lighting lamps and provided ghee for the lamps. Another inscription in the later part notes that Nacchiyar temple restored fallen deities with nine new idols. One inscription mentions the daily service of Pommadevan, who may have been the record keeper. Another inscription states that Tondaiman Akkampadiyar Pallavarayan provided six cows for lighting the temple lamps (sandhya deepam) at the Thirumanikkayathu Nayanar temple.
Inscriptions record portions of the reigns of Rajendra Chola I, Maravarman Sundarapandiyan I, and later Pandya rulers. Some inscriptions indicate donations made in the name of the Pandya Kulasekaran for special days, deity processions, and temple rituals. Fragmentary inscriptions record that on Vaikasi festival day, offerings were made for worship in the temple on his birth star.
The inscriptions specify that land revenue should be collected appropriately for donations and for kuruvai cultivation. They also mention tanks like Modaneri and Veerapandiyan Kulam. One inscription records that Ilaya Perumal Pillai Kumarar Muthusamiapillai built the entrance mandapam in front of the temple. Another inscription documents that Kruttina Devan Akkampadi Thattar sold a piece of land for 200 old coins while he was in this mandapam. Pulpavan Punniyan and others sold coconut trees and other lands at fair prices to Ambalavan Thirumanikkayadu.
The names of temple administrators and various royal officials appear in these inscriptions. Temple administrators are mentioned as those who supervise and control. The names of several Maheswarars serving in the Thirumanikkayam Nayanar temple are recorded, along with their respective duties.
Inscriptions under pillar sculptures identify Sankarappa Nayakar, Sivalappa Nayakar, and Pomman Nayakar. In the Mahamandapam pillar of the goddess sanctum, one inscription states that it was made by Vadamutt Nadu Aatrurayan of Ayudaveema Nallur.
Names such as Sundarapandi Devan Arangkathan, Devanambi Sivakalyana Nambi, Hariharan Patan, Ambal Perumal, Nandan Kondan Mandan Chakravarthi, Nandapiran Patan, Sadapiran Patan, Sattamararan Patan are mentioned. Names of Veerasinghadevan, Tondaiman, Poyan, Meenavatharayan, Dhananjeyarayan, Vanavatharayyan, Aradhirayan, Thiruppuvanavan, Tholludaiyan, Saragayyan Thiruppuvanamudaiyan, Manaparanan Sattapiran, Seeralan, Ramanana Kulasekaradevan appear as signed individuals.
