Summary
Generally, in Tamil Nadu, Amman temples are established to protect the sacredness of villages. In some of these village temples, there are no deity sculptures; instead, uncarved stones are installed. In some places, only a trident (Soolam) is placed. Similarly, the Mandai Amman deity in the center of the village mandai does not have a sculpted form. In this temple, there is a pedestal and a trident about 3 feet tall. Near the temple pedestal, a roughly 3-foot-high stone pillar is installed, with a lamp lit for worship. Two pillars are placed in the temple courtyard, and bells are hung between them.
